Removing a Pinto shifter

Postby corky9 » Mon Jun 15, 2009 8:47 am

My mustang trans is popping out of gear under power on the track. I have another trans with the same ratio but it is from a pinto. You have to lift a knob with you fingers to get reverse. How do I remove this shifter to get it into the car or do I have to cut a hole in the floor pan to install it. Also what do I need to do to the old trans to fix it to stay in gear. I am not a transmition guy and need the advice. Thanks

Corky,
sounds like the synco is bad that is why it's popping out of gear. which ever gear it is replace them and it will stop doing this.
As far as the shifter need to know which tranny it is, all my pinto trannys have a screw in shifter and all you have to do is unscrew them and pull them out.

How do I find out what trans it is. I know the shifter has a lever at the handle that you lift with your fingers to get it to reverse. I hope that trans is the same. I will have to measure everything to make sure it fits.

hey Corky, grubby told me to be careful when using the pinto tranny, there were two bellhousings one is shorter and the starter won't fit right.

The mustang bell is 1/2" shorter than the pinto bell. Cant interchange them or the input shaft will go in to far and put the crank in a bind
