TWO IN A ROW FOR MANNIA

Dave Mannia picked up his second feature win in as many weeks at the South Bend Motor Speedway on Friday. 17 Sportsman Late Models took the green for their 30 lap Feature with Les McLean leading the first 6 laps. A crash on the back stretch forced Mike Verduin and Jeff Forsythe to drop out early. Charlie Hanna made his way to the front and took over the lead on lap 7 stretching it to a half lap. Dave Mannia then drove the outside groove to the front with the two drivers taking turns at the top spot through lapped traffic. A late lapcaution bunched the field up for the
final 5 laps with Mannia holding off Hanna for the win. Keith Carter came
across 3rd followed by Paul Scott, Bill Rutt, McLean, Al Mauer, Brian Miller, Erik Bidwell and Bob Bean in the top 10. Bill Lovely and Jason Newgent took turns leading the Sportsman “B” evnt when Greg
Gifford took command at the half-way mark and went on for the checker.
Newgent, John Streeting, Jr., Robert Haisley and Lovely rounded out the top 5.

In the Mini Stock 25 lap Main, Derek Davis and Cory Ryman battled for the lead before Ryman was able to get out front for good and lead the final half of the event for the win. Jim Cauffman worked his way up from the back of the pack but ran out of laps coming across 2nd. 3rd – 10th went to Rich Hensley, Brian Lindsey, Davis, Derrick Griffin, Ben McCallum, Jim Newman, Craig Cassel and Bruce Pratt.

John Henderson led through lap 10 of the 20 lap Thunder Car Feature. Kenneth Dodd then got by in traffic but was then passed by Ron Sikorski who stayed up front for the win. Paul Fontanelli also went by Dodd for 2nd with 4th – 10th going to Corey Blume, Corey Woods, Jimmy Klimowic, Tony Johns, Matt Elliott, Rick Boal and Amanda White. James Click led all laps in the Thunder Car “B” Feature with Steve Opfer, Robert Grahl, Rusty Freeman and Thomas Groning finishing in the top 5.

In Preliminary events, Dave Mannia was fast qualifier in the Sportsman Late Models with a 12.680. Mike Verduin was the Dash and a Heat winner as Jason Newgent and Charlie Hanna picked up the other Heat wins.

Derrick Griffin was quickest in the Mini Stocks with a 13.177. The Dash was won by Bruce Pratt, and Heat wins went to Dale Olivier, Sr. and Jim Newman.

At intermission, there was a lot of two-wheel racing going on as kids competed in bike races on the ¼ mile oval. In the 6 year old and under group, Kobe Doc Jones of Indianapolis took the win with Scott Breeding of New Carlisle and Blane Condon of Mishawaka finishing 2nd and 3rd. In the 7 – 9 year old group, Cody Blume of South Bend was the winner followed by Cameron Mester of Walkerton and Erik Bidwell of South Bend. Cameron Blume of South Bend was the winner in the 10 – 12 year olds. Jimmy Zarembka and Tyler Robles, both of South Bend, came across 2nd and 3rd. Jordan Callahan of Laporte and Ronnie Holoway of
South Bend were the top 2 finishers in the 13 – 15 year olds and 1st and 2nd in the 16 year old group went to Derick Nesvold of South Bend and Johnny Olivier of Niles. Congratulations to all of our racers!
