Postby Ron Verash » Fri Jun 13, 2014 10:46 am

On June 13, the South Bend Motor Speedway will host the Induction Ceremony for the Michiana Racing Hall of Fame and it's class for 2014. The Hall of Fame started in 2002, and has inducted the greats from the area including Track Owners, Officials, Drivers, Sponsors, and Mechanics.

This year inductees include Jim Brown from Edwardsburg, Michigan. He has been involved in area racing for over 35 years, and has fielded Championship winning cars. Next is TV Station FOX 28. They have covered local Auto Racing for over 10 years. They have attended every Hall of Fame event, plus numerous events throughout the year. Dean Huppert and Allison Hayes have been the primary staff throughout this timeframe. Sparky the Clown, as known as Barry Naragon, has been a fixture at area Tracks for 20 years. Along with handing out Candy and trinkets, this South Bend native has also been on the track crew, even in his "clowning" around outfits. Sparky also does numerous Classic car shows, and has a couple unique vehicles, to get around the track. Next is Bob Senneker. Racing out Dorr, Michigan, Bob ran and won against the best at Berlin, Kalamazoo, Hartford, and Jackson Motor Speedways. He would venture further out, and ran with the American Speed Association. He won 484 Features, including 85 in the ASA Racing series, with 7 wins in the Winchester 400's. He also set 65 Track Records. Next is Carl Smith from South Bend. He raced for 5 years in the Hobby Stocks at South Bend in the 70's. He stayed in the area racing scene throughout the years. In 2007, he bought the website: www.Stockcarextreme.com. This site has grown into one of the leading websites for all forms of Racing in the Midwest. In 2008, he helped do a show to keep the South Bend Motor Speedway from closing. The "Save the Speedway show had over 170 cars, and 5000 fans. Another event was done in 2009, and that gave the track another year to keep from closing for good. And the last inductee is Farmer Joe Smith from Elkhart. He started in Drag Strip racing, and then helped work on oval track race cars, including cars for Johnny Croy. He would start racing in his late 30's. In all, he won 8 Championships.
